Covid-19 and Chiropractic in Boulder

Is chiropractic a treatment option for coronavirus?

In short no, but the reason for this answer may not be what you expect. Chiropractic does not treat or cure any condition. Only our body can heal itself. Now, with that being said can chiropractic in Boulder help the body to function more efficiently at protecting and healing itself and thus make it more resilient to external stressors. Like viruses? Absolutely! Let me explain why…

Chiropractic in Boulder is more than just for the neck and back

Most people are aware that in many cases chiropractic can help one’s body deal with neck and back pain, and headaches, just to name a few, but many may not know that chiropractic goes much further than that. Before I explain, first I must explain our purpose as chiropractors.

The purpose of chiropractic is to remove nerve interference. We treat what are called subluxations, which are joint misalignments. When these subluxations are found in our spinal joints, it can cause compression in our spinal nerves, which then interferes with our brain's ability to communicate effectively with the rest of our body.

For example, let’s say I am using a water hose to fill up a bucket of water and as I am filling it up, I kink the water hose slightly. What would happen? The water coming out of the hose may now be coming out in different directions than what I had intended and I may miss filling up the bucket as efficiently as I had hoped, or let’s say I compress it so much that the water comes out as a trickle or not at all. That would be even worse. This is a simple analogy of what may happen to our nervous system’s pathways when subluxations are present.

Correcting Subluxations

Now in order to correct the above issue, I could simply unkink the hose so it would work in the way it is designed to. This is what chiropractors do when we perform what is called an adjustment in order to remove subluxations! Once we remove the nerve compression and interference this will allow the body to communicate with itself more efficiently and hopefully heal itself. Of course, there are many times when help from other health care providers may be needed if the subluxations are not present or contributing to a particular issue, but checking for subluxations is a good first step when warranted.

Now, back to COVID-19. As you can see from above, chiropractic is not a treatment for the coronavirus, but it may help the body to function more efficiently thus lowering the effect this virus or any virus, or outside stressor may have on our bodies.

COVID-19 Studies

Some initial studies are showing that there may be 5-80% of people infected with COVID-19 that show no symptoms, though we need much more data before any conclusion can be made. Why are these people asymptomatic? It is because their immune system is functioning at such a high efficiency that it does not allow the virus to affect them as much, as compared to other individuals. They may also lack preexisting conditions that challenge our immune systems even further and thus can compromise our overall health.

I hope you found this blog post informative and I wish you all the best during this difficult time. Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay adjusted.
