Vertigo and Dizziness

Chiropractic Care for People Who Suffer from Vertigo and Dizziness

When Your World Won’t Stop Spinning

Those afflicted with vertigo experience spinning, nausea, and dizziness, either through their own minimal movements, or while being perfectly still. They may wake up one morning and not be able to physically get out of bed because the room is spinning and swirling quickly around them. Many people end up vomiting, unable to work, drive, confined to their beds and most times there is no warning when an attack will hit, which often leads to anxiety.

What Causes Vertigo?

Some common causes of vertigo are inflammation, inner ear infections, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), calcium deposits, Meniere’s disease, head/neck injuries, brain problems, certain migraines/headaches, and acoustic neuromas.

Below are additional details on some of the causes of vertigo:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): Vertigo brought on when changing the position of your head, often when looking one way or the other, or when getting out of bed in the morning.

  • Meniere’s Disease: This disease is characterized by three symptoms; vertigo, hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ear). Some people describe a feeling of “fullness” in the ear as well. This disease is thought to be brought on by excessive buildup of fluid in the inner ear.

  • Calcium Deposits: At times crystal-like calcium deposits in the inner ear break off and stimulate the part of the ear that controls balance. This has been known to cause symptoms of vertigo.

Vertigo Treatment Options

Recommended treatment for vertigo is dependent on the suspected cause but treatment options may include canalith repositioning, vestibular rehabilitation, medication, and even surgery.

Conservative treatment options include chiropractic, diet and exercise. Many people have benefited from chiropractic treatment to relieve their vertigo but only if it is determined that the source of the patient’s vertigo is due to subluxations.

Subluxation is when the spinal vertebrae are found to be misaligned. Subluxation can often put pressure on the spinal nerves which in turn can cause a myriad of symptoms, because our nervous system controls everything in our body. Chiropractors treat and remove subluxation with spinal adjustments. If removing the subluxation results in the reduction or removal of the patient’s symptoms, then chances are your cause has been found.

Relief Is Close At Hand

Every patient’s needs are evaluated individually and while we generally recommend conservative treatment there are times when a referral to another provider will be recommended should your situation suggest it.

Many people are told that they will have to live with their vertigo forever but don’t resign yourself to this belief before checking out all of your options. If you are experiencing dizziness or symptoms of vertigo and you are in the Boulder area, please contact us to make an appointment for evaluation to determine if chiropractic care is a valid treatment option for you.

Vertigo Patient Testimonial

I had radiating pain down my left arm and tingling into my left hand and also had suffered with tinnitus for 7 years. In addition to that, I had a 2 ½ year history of occasional spinning attacks (vertigo) where my surroundings would seem as if they were moving while I was stationary. I had not seen any doctors for my arm pain but I had seen MD’s in the past for my dizziness and random attacks. They did not diagnosis my condition and my treatment included a prescription for a drug, which was no help. I was lead to believe that there was nothing that could be done.

Since coming to Choice Chiropractic and Wellness Center, my results have been very good. With hard work, persistence, and an integrated approach, Dr. Schnelle was able to diagnosis and treat the cause of my conditions. I am at the point now where I haven’t had any spinning attacks in a long while and no longer have arm pain or tingling in my hand. I would highly recommend Dr. Schnelle’s care and have told many people about him and the results that I have attained with his treatment.*
