Chiropractic Care for People with Sciatica Pain

How Chiropractic Care Can Help Your Sciatica Pain

Sciatica refers to the condition created when the sciatic nerve suffers irritation. A sciatic nerve extends from either side of the lower back and buttocks, down each leg and into each foot. Depending on the severity of the irritation, symptoms range from mild burning and tingling or numbness to excruciating and debilitating pain.

What Causes Sciatica?

The nerve might endure irritation when a bone in the lower back slips out of alignment and compresses the nerve. A bulging disc might also cause the problem. The nerve may become compressed if the pelvis rotates and applies pressure to the sacroiliac joint. A pelvis anomaly might occur after a hip, leg or foot injury, a fractured leg or if a muscle imbalance occurs during a particular activity or sport. The sciatic nerve also lies beneath the complex muscles of the buttocks. In some people, the nerve might pass through the piriformis muscle. When this muscle contracts with normal movement, the action compresses the nerve causing irritation.

Sciatica Treatment

Researchers have long held varying opinions as to the optimal method of treatment. A study performed by European physicians comparing the benefits of chiropractic care, cortisone injections and physical therapy in a group of 51 adult individuals suffering from the condition. Scientists divided the subjects into three groups, each receiving one of the preferred methods of treatment. Subjects underwent evaluation for the success of the treatment after six weeks and again after 12 weeks of therapy.

Researchers judged each group depending on the alleviation of symptoms and the rate of pain that patients continued experiencing. The final results indicated that 72 percent of the individuals in the chiropractic care group received symptomatic relief. However, only 50 percent of the patients receiving cortisone injections obtained relief and only 20 percent of the patients receiving physical therapy experienced satisfactory results.

Chiropractic Care

The method of therapy that a chiropractor uses to treat sciatica depends on the underlying cause. Following X-rays, a verbal and physical assessment, we may use one or a combination of the following therapies.

  • Ice/Cold – minimizes inflammation and helps reduce discomfort.
  • Ultrasound – Creates a soothing heat that penetrates tissues and enhances blood circulation while reducing muscle cramping, spasms, stiffness and swelling.
  • TENS Unit – The small battery powered device emits a mild electrical current that interferes with nerve transmission of pain signals and helps minimize spasms.
  • Spinal Manipulation – Is the gentle realignment of the spinal column, which also repositions affected muscles and alleviates stress on the sciatic nerve.

Testimonials From Patients Who Had Sciatica

When I first went in to Choice Chiropractic & Wellness Center I was dealing with constant headaches, neck and severe upper back pain, numbness and tingling in my arms, pain in lower back, and sciatica. I had been suffering for YEARS. I tried yoga which helped some and took Advil for headaches but the results were limited.

I have seen excellent results in relief and improvement of conditions I thought were permanent because I had been in pain for years. I have more flexibility in my back and limbs than I have had my entire life. If you see Dr. Schnelle, you won’t regret it. It’s the best thing you can do for your spine, your mental and physical health.*

I was suffering from a month long flare-up of constant pains, muscle spasms, and sciatic pain when a friend referred me to Dr. Schnelle. I also had a history of sharp neck pain and hand numbness. Over the counter medications, icing, and Vicodan had not helped. After one month I felt 80% better. As treatment continued, I gained flexibility and range of motion. By month four, I was able to climb in and out of the attic crawl space with no aches or pains.

Referring others to Dr. Schnelle is easy as he takes the time to explain the treatment and cares about how you are progressing. He sincerely wants to help others through chiropractics and is true to his word. Dr. Schnelle has proven to me that chiropractic doesn’t have to hurt to be effective.*

I was referred to Dr. Schnelle for help with low back and hip pain. Previous “care” included Vicoden to handle pain and now only Advil when needed. I also have been seeing a naturopath for acupuncture and the combination of chiropractic and acupuncture is helping. The staff treats me wonderfully and Dr. Schnelle always listens to my concerns. I am still making progress and my results have been good so far. I would definitely recommend Choice Chiropractic and Wellness Center to others for care.*
